Porsche – New 911 Targa

Fueled by my initial Unreal Engine 5 experiment, I was hooked on exploring Porsche’s brand identity. I dove into their website, dissecting their product presentation, and decided to showcase the new Porsche 911 Targa in their signature style, but with my own twist.

Unreal Engine 5’s path tracing was tempting, but the rendering was painfully slow, and I lacked some crucial features. So, I switched gears to Blender and its Cycles renderer.

This time, I took the reins on the audio side, composing and designing the entire soundscape from scratch. I wanted total control over the subtle nuances that guide emotions. That’s where my experiment deviates from Porsche’s norm. They typically lean on classical music, heavy on traditional instruments like bassoons, cellos, strings, and full orchestras, often with those signature Hans Zimmer-esque chord progressions. It works, sure, but I wanted to push the envelope.

Porsche talks a lot about “The Harmony of Tradition and Innovation,” and while classical music nails the tradition part, I felt electronic elements could better capture the innovation angle. So, I infused subtle Moog-style leads and a driving beat to accentuate the car’s modernity and inject a dose of urban energy and drive, something pure classical music struggles to achieve.

This whole project clocked in at around 25 hours, including sound design and music composition. All 4K scenes were rendered in about 14 hours on a 2x2080ti setup, and final touches were made in DaVinci Resolve. It was a whirlwind of creativity, but I believe the result speaks for itself.

Software: Unreal Engine 5, Davinci Resolve. Ableton Live...
